TERMS OF USE
Responsible detecting. Clear responsibilities.
The rules for using Metal Detecting Log during beta, including permissions, mapping, events, reporting, Night Watch and account responsibilities.
Effective date: 7 October 2026. Metal Detecting Log ("MDL") is currently in beta. By creating an account or using MDL, you agree to these Terms.
1. Who provides MDL
Metal Detecting Log is operated by Adam Antonowicz in the United Kingdom. Support enquiries can be sent to support@metaldetectinglog.co.uk.
2. Eligibility and accounts
You must be 18 or over to create an MDL account. You are responsible for providing accurate account information, keeping your credentials secure and for activity carried out through your account. Do not share passwords or recovery credentials. We may restrict or suspend an account where reasonably necessary to protect users, land data, service security or comply with law.
3. Beta status
MDL is in beta. Features, interfaces, datasets and availability may change during testing. Errors, interruptions or incomplete data may occur. You should keep any independently required records and should not rely on a beta feature as your only source for a legal, safety or land-access decision.
4. Permission to detect and access land
MDL helps users record and manage permissions; it does not grant permission to enter land or detect. A record, invitation, field status or map shown in MDL does not replace the underlying permission or agreement with the relevant landowner, occupier, estate or organiser. You are responsible for ensuring that you have all permissions and consents required for your activity.
5. Lawful and responsible detecting
You are responsible for complying with applicable laws, regulations, protected-site restrictions, treasure/reporting requirements, access conditions and landowner instructions. MDL must not be used to facilitate unauthorised detecting, trespass, unlawful removal of objects, evasion of reporting obligations or other illegal activity.
6. Maps, historical layers, LiDAR and Protected Area Safety
Maps, satellite imagery, historical datasets, LiDAR, heritage records and Protected Area Safety are provided as research and planning aids. They may be incomplete, delayed, approximate or contain errors. Protected Area Safety does not make a legal determination and does not confirm that detecting is permitted. Always verify relevant restrictions and current official records before acting.
7. GPS and navigation
GPS accuracy varies by device, environment and provider. Navigation points, field boundaries, parking points, meeting points and other mapped locations are aids only. They do not guarantee safe access, a public right of way or permission to enter a location. Use appropriate judgement and obey local access and safety requirements.
8. Finds and provenance
You are responsible for the accuracy of information you enter about a find. MDL is designed to preserve provenance by linking finds to location, session, permission or event context where available. Do not intentionally create false provenance or attach a find to land, a permission or another user's activity without a proper basis.
9. Photos and user content
You retain ownership of content you create or upload, subject to any rights belonging to others. You grant MDL the limited rights necessary to host, process, display, back up and transmit that content solely to provide and secure the service and the sharing/reporting functions you choose. You must have the right to upload the content and must not upload unlawful, abusive or rights-infringing material.
10. Detecting Sessions
Session records are an operational log, not independent proof that detecting was lawful or that a person remained within a permitted area at all times. Location and time information may be used to link finds and provide relevant records to authorised land-management roles within the applicable operational scope.
11. Hosted Events and Rallies
MDL provides tools for organisers and participants, but MDL is not the organiser of a third-party rally or event merely because that event uses the service. Organisers remain responsible for the accuracy of event information, land access, permissions, field availability, participant instructions and event safety. Participants remain responsible for following organiser and landowner instructions and applicable law.
12. Night Watch
Night Watch is an optional event-security support feature. When enabled, it may use background geofencing and send a triggered current location point and associated account/event information for verification and organiser alerting. It is not a police, emergency or professional security service; it does not guarantee that unauthorised activity will be detected or prevented. Users must not use Night Watch alerts to justify unsafe confrontation. Where urgent assistance is required, contact the appropriate emergency or law-enforcement service.
13. Landowner, Estate, Farm Manager and organiser access
Operational roles are intended to receive only information relevant to the land or event scope they are authorised to manage. Access to an MDL role does not transfer ownership of another user's account or unrelated records. Users with elevated access must use information responsibly and only for legitimate land, event, safety or record-management purposes.
14. MDL Reports
An MDL Report is a record generated from information held in Metal Detecting Log. It is not an official archaeological, treasure or legal report. Reports depend on the accuracy and completeness of underlying user records and should be reviewed before being relied on or shared.
15. Official find reporting
MDL may help prepare information for the Treasure Trove Unit in Scotland or the Portable Antiquities Scheme / Finds Liaison Officers in England and Wales. The user chooses whether to initiate and send such a report. MDL does not guarantee that a submission satisfies every legal deadline or reporting requirement. You remain responsible for checking and meeting obligations that apply to your find.
16. Third-party services and data
MDL relies on third-party infrastructure and may display mapping, imagery, heritage or navigation content provided by others. Those services may have their own terms, licences, availability limits and privacy practices. MDL cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability or accuracy of third-party services.
17. Acceptable use
You must not attempt to bypass access controls, access another user's private data without authorisation, interfere with the service, probe or exploit security vulnerabilities, automate abusive requests, impersonate another person, misuse precise locations, or use MDL in a way that is unlawful or materially harms another user, landowner, organiser or the service.
18. Account inactivity and deletion
Inactive accounts may be warned after approximately 11 months, deactivated after 12 months and scheduled for deletion after a further 90 days as described in the Privacy Policy. Manual account deletion remains available from Account Details and through our web deletion route. Limited records may be retained where legally necessary or converted into genuinely anonymised shared operational history.
19. Intellectual property
The MDL name, branding, application, website, original interface, original code and original materials are protected by applicable intellectual-property rights. Third-party datasets, maps, imagery, fonts, platform marks and other materials remain subject to the rights and licences of their respective owners.
20. Service availability and changes
We may maintain, update, restrict or change MDL where reasonably necessary for security, legal compliance, product development or service operation. We do not promise uninterrupted availability. Where practical, material changes affecting users will be communicated through the app, website or account contact details.
21. Liability
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or rights that cannot legally be excluded. Subject to those protections, MDL is a record, research and operational tool and is not responsible for losses caused solely by a user's unlawful activity, lack of land permission, failure to verify official restrictions, inaccurate user-entered information, or reasonable reliance on clearly identified third-party/beta data beyond the purpose for which it is provided.
22. Consumer rights
Nothing in these Terms removes mandatory rights you have under applicable consumer or data-protection law.
23. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as MDL develops. If a change materially affects existing users, we will take reasonable steps to bring it to their attention. Continued use after an updated version becomes effective may be treated as acceptance where permitted by law.
